Service Initiatives
As global citizenship and community building is a key pillar at Scientist in the Crib, we empower our communities and families to participate in improving the quality of life of those in need, particularly children enrolled in our programs, those across the United States and those around the world. Our service initiatives range from supporting international agencies in targeted projects around the world, to directly supporting local families in Chicago.
Campaign #1: Gaza and a call for critical aid
The situation in Gaza has escalated dramatically, affecting millions of internally displaced persons (IDPs). Started by SITC friend, Dr. Zaher Sahloul in 2017, MedGlobal is now at the forefront, providing essential healthcare services under these dire circumstances in Gaza. MedGlobal’s strategy targets the dire healthcare needs of nearly 1.9 million IDPs, focusing on maternal and child health, primary care, nutrition, trauma care, and mental health. Learn more here.
SITC Fundraising Goal: $10,000.00

Campaign #2: Pakistan and a call to transform HIV policy
Since his son was diagnosed with HIV during a mass outbreak among babies and children in Pakistan, Shahzado Shar has often been forced to choose between food and medicine. His five-year-old was one of the hundreds who tested positive in 2019 after a whistle-blower doctor uncovered a scandal involving the reuse of needles in southern Sindh province. The number of patients quickly swelled and two years later, the figure stands at more than 1,500, according to data from the provincial health ministry. This year, the International AIDS Society (IAS) – in partnership with Nai Zindagi and Aga Khan University, is organizing a scientific symposium, titled “HIV science and community: Progress and challenges in Pakistan”. This national meeting following the 12th IAS Conference on HIV Science will provide access to and discuss the latest scientific evidence in the local context to strengthen the HIV response in the country with key stakeholders. As SITC’s Board Chair, Mr. Ahsan Ahmad will be moderating a few sessions, donated funds will support cultivating an enabling environment and influencing policy to curtail pediatric and adult HIV rates in the country.
